Starting your morning on the right foot could be one of the most important things you do in terms of ensuring a productive day. According to Dr. Allison Harvey from UC Berkley we can all be grumpy in the morning because it takes our bodies between 5 and 20 minutes to make the transition from sleep to a fully active mind.
So, being grumpy is not completely our choice and it’s just our body going through a transition stage. But that doesn’t mean that you have to stay grumpy. Here, in no particular order, are five easy habits that will help you eliminate your grumpiness and improve your productivity and attitude during your day:
[highlight1]1[/highlight1] Start your morning with some music.
Music is a great emotional stimulator in general and can be great for moving your emotions to where you want them to be. Listen to some music that is soothing or inspiring in the morning. It will do wonders to your attitude. Stay away from negatively charged music and anything that will bring up sad moments in your past.
[highlight1]2[/highlight1] Start your morning by listening to an inspiring audio book or podcast.
Listening to an inspiring podcast or book while you get ready for your day will do wonders in terms of motivation. There are hundreds of inspiring and motivational audio books and podcasts that you can play as you wake up and they will all provide you with amazing information. If you are trying to learn something, your retention abilities will be excellent during this time.
[highlight1]3[/highlight1] Every so often, turn off your television and don’t watch the morning news.
I have found through careful analysis that watching the news in the morning can have a detrimental effect on your attitude and overall feeling. While it might be important to know of current affairs it is likely that you will see negativity across all channels. Death, injustice and violence are a huge part of television these days.
[highlight1]4[/highlight1] Text or chat with someone you love.If you are not lucky enough to live with your loved ones then find a way to communicate with them as you are starting your morning. This can inspire you and build your courage, as you get ready to face a tough day. Communicate with those you love and be positive about the way you communicate. This is contagious and positivism will only harness a positive attitude within you.
[highlight1]5[/highlight1] Eat a healthy and nutritious breakfast.
I’m not a nutritionist but I know that a healthy diet will help you be more active and mentally aware. I recommend, cereals, granola and fruits to start your day. This type of breakfast will give you the fuel you need to get going without requiring a nap to start you’re day. I can’t speak enough about eating a good light breakfast. You will have to trust me on this one and do it. You can thank me later!
These are just 5 things that I have found to help me start my day on the right foot. Now these might or might not work for you. The thing is, that you have to look for what helps you be more active and with a better attitude. What do you do to start your day appropriately? I’d love to hear some ideas.
